Bucharest, November 4, 2026
SN Nuclearelectrica SA announces that, following the fulfillment of the minimum necessary conditions, today, November 4, 2026, specific actions were initiated to reconnect Unit 1 of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant. The resynchronization of Unit 1 with the National Energy System (SEN) is scheduled for Friday, November 6, 2026.
The reconnection of a nuclear unit is a complex, strictly regulated operation carried out in strict compliance with nuclear safety requirements.
Mihai Gioară, CEO of Nuclearelectrica: “The start of Unit 1’s reconnection procedures, following the fulfillment of the minimum conditions for a fully safe synchronization, is an important step eagerly awaited by the company, the authorities, and the public alike. Synchronizing unit 1 to the National Energy System is necessary to achieve energy security and the stability of the system.
Throughout the shutdown, the plant’s specialists carried out specific activities with professionalism and responsibility to maintain the units in safe conditions. I thank them for all their sustained efforts. This situation compels us to continue the measures already underway in order to respond appropriately should such circumstances recur. Together with the relevant authorities and our partners, we are working on concrete short, medium, and long-term solutions to increase the availability of our nuclear facilities, should a similar event recur, and to mitigate its effects. This is Nuclearelectrica’s commitment for the coming period.”
The operation of Unit 1 requires the use of large volumes of water to cool the reactor, which will lead to a drop in the water level in the intake basin. Therefore, the synchronization of Unit 2 depends on a sustained rise in the Danube’s water level. Once these conditions are met, Unit 2 will be able to be restarted and subsequently synchronized with the National Energy System.
Nuclearelectrica strengthens its firm commitment to producing nuclear energy – a safe, reliable, and carbon-free source that is essential to Romania’s energy security.
