Feldioara Uranium Concentrate Processing Plant (FPCU) will deliver nuclear fuel in the form of uranium dioxide (UO2) to Argentina, a first for the Romanian nuclear industry
Bucharest, 13 October 2025
SN Nuclearelectrica SA announces that its subsidiary, Feldioara Uranium Concentrate Processing Plant (FPCU), will deliver nuclear fuel in the form of uranium dioxide (UO2) to Argentina, a first for the Romanian nuclear industry.
Feldioara Uranium Concentrate Processing Plant (FPCU) Feldioara, a subsidiary of Nuclearelectrica, won the international competition and began processing uranium octoxide (U3O8) for the manufacture of nuclear raw material, uranium dioxide (UO2), to cover the consumption needs of nuclear power plants in Argentina for a period of one year.
“The fact that we are delivering nuclear raw materials for the first time to another country that owns and operates PHWR reactors is a source of pride and achievement for Nuclearelectrica and its subsidiary, FPCU Feldioara, but also for the development of the Romanian fuel cycle, given that Nuclearelectrica took over the processing assets in December 2022, operationalised Feldioara in 2023 and continues to modernise. Such an agreement is a confirmation of the quality of the raw material processed at Feldioara. I am proud of the Feldioara team and I thank them!” – Cosmin Ghita, General Manager of Nuclearelectrica
“Beyond supplying the raw material needed to manufacture fuel assemblies at FCN Pitesti and, subsequently, to operate Units 1 and 2 at CNE Cernavoda, at the highest level of quality to maintain excellence in the integrated nuclear production flow, we have set out to develop, expand our supply network and offer the nuclear fuel cycle in Romania a new dimension: the international one. – Dr. Eng. Agafiel Gelu Maracineanu, General Manager of FPCU Feldioara.
The strategic decision of SN Nuclearelectrica SA to acquire part of the Feldioara assets necessary for processing raw materials was aimed at preserving and developing the integrated Romanian nuclear fuel cycle, the integrated production capacities of SNN and, equally, ensuring the production of fuel assemblies and the optimal operation of FCN Pitești and CNE Cernavodă, at an advantageous transaction cost.
Given the investment projects to expand SNN’s nuclear capacities, the purpose of acquiring the processing assets was also to consolidate nuclear capacities and provide Romania with full investment capacity.
Chronologically, on 28 December 2022, Nuclearelectrica completed the acquisition of assets from the technical uranium concentrate processing stream within the CNU Feldioara Branch. The assets that became the property of Nuclearelectrica upon completion of the above-mentioned transaction were leased to FPCU Feldioara (a subsidiary of SNN) for the operation and start-up of the production process.
Between January and March 2023, all necessary steps were taken to authorise the production process and prepare the facilities for the start of processing. In practice, Nuclearelectrica made Feldioara operational.
Currently, two years after becoming operational, Nuclearelectrica, through its subsidiary FPCU Feldioara, will deliver uranium dioxide internationally, a variable of development and diversification that will add value and financial benefits.
