Work safety

IMG_2511CNE Cernavoda is firmly committed to ensuring the protection of personnel against the dangers that an industrial environment such as a nuclear power plant can present.

In order to achieve this commitment, CNE Cernavoda has developed an occupational health and safety program aimed at both the plant’s staff and contractors.

The occupational health and safety program meets the requirements of national legislation but also includes the experience gained from the partnership with the international nuclear industry; is designed on the principle of co-responsibility that must be demonstrated by the company’s management but also by the employees as partners in achieving the mission of producing electrical and thermal energy in safe and economic efficiency conditions.

To this end, our goal is to promote a safe and healthy work environment by preventing any work accident or occupational illness.

The occupational health and safety program in CNE Cernavoda is structured in ten directions:

Organization
A procedural framework is established that develops the administrative measures designed to ensure the management, coordination and implementation of the occupational health and safety program. All procedures are communicated to the entire staff of the plant.

Identification and assessment of hazards Hazards
are identified and risks associated with the activities carried out are assessed and actions are initiated to prevent or limit the impact of potential incidents.

Training and qualification
Through our own training center, employees (permanent and contractors) are provided with specific work safety courses aimed at strengthening safe work attitudes and practices.

Safety of the execution of the works
A system is established for the safe execution of the works. This system includes several administrative barriers that have the role of identifying hazards and adopting measures to eliminate or reduce them. The staff is provided with individual protective equipment corresponding to the work tasks.

Safety of the equipment
The operation of the equipment is done safely by applying the regulations regarding their design, commissioning and regular maintenance.

Investigation of incidents
A process of reporting, investigation and recording of incidents is established, which concerns both the operation of the equipment and the security and health of the personnel. The lessons learned are communicated in the organization in order to improve performance.

The response to emergencies
A response plan is implemented in case of incidents that may affect the safety of the staff.

Employee representation
Through  the Occupational Health and Safety Committee,  the involvement of employees in the control of the working environment is ensured. The employees’ representatives evaluate the state of health and safety at work and recommend measures to improve it to the management.

Health monitoring
The health status of the staff is monitored through medical examinations upon employment, periodically or when changing jobs. Systematically, through medical examinations, the professional risk factors for each employee are correlated with the work tasks.

In the field of health promotion, information sessions are organized that aim at recommendations for a healthy lifestyle as well as debates on current medical topics – metabolic, cardiovascular diseases and stress at work. As part of the same program, there is no shortage of periodic medical checks, determinations of physico-chemical noxes, assessment of risk factors and rehabilitation and physical recovery services.

Improving the performance of occupational health and safety
The performance of the occupational health and safety process is continuously evaluated through specific indicators and through field observation of work practices. Also, the contact with the experience of other plant operators, with the experience of the World Association of Nuclear Operators ensures the source of information for new opportunities to improve the existing processes.
